Clevedon Swimming club finished off the year in
style by finishing higher in the National Speedo league than ever
before. In only their second year in the Second Division of the
Wales and West Speedo League, Clevedon finished fourth in the 'A'
final to bring home 5th place overall!
The team travelled over to the Olympic sized pool
at Bath University for the Final and last competition of 2006. After
reaching 3rd place on the night, for a while, Clevedon were reeled
back in and did marvellously well to fend off Bristol Henleaze for
4th place against some extremely tough competition. Final positions
were:
Blaenau Gwent 326
Yeovil 264
Glamorgan Valleys 250
Clevedon 213
Bristol Henleaze 210
Pontypool 196
Team Torfaen 193
West Wilts Force 5 'B' 149
Due to the standard of the competition and the
8 lane battle, individual wins were thin on the ground. They came
from: Stef Reynolds, Megan Prideaux and Laura Neal. Megan did exceptionally
well as she was still recovering from a road accident earlier in
the week and had to be pulled out of the pool after her race due
to exhaustion. Jenni Gilbert, Hayley Burston, Megan Prideaux and
Ellena Ibal were successful in the Girls 15 and under 4 x 50m freestyle
relay.
This gala and the stunning final position in the
Speedo league that the team achieved is a triumphant finale to a
memorable season for Clevedon swimming club. Two highlights have
been the breaking of 35 Championship Best Times out of a total of
110 events in the annual Club Championships and Sue Clinton winning
the national Volunteer of the Year award in November. Clevedon swimmers
are swimming faster than they have ever swum, are making a name
for the club both locally and further afield and are supported by
a network of Coaches, Teachers, Officials, Administrators and Helpers
that is second to none.
