Clevedon Swimming Club ran riot in the latest
heat of this year's Mini Series competition at Keynsham Leisure
Centre on Saturday 28th July. On paper the squad looked weakened
by unavailability caused by the holiday season and injury. Many
of the squad's stars were in action, but they were almost eclipsed
by the performance of the less experienced members.
In the first 10 races Clevedon opened up a 9 point
lead and continued to pull away from all the others finally winning
by a record 69 point margin! Clevedon's dominance was such that
they won a total of 24 races out of 53 in total and finished second
in a similar number. Final points position was:
Clevedon 261
Bristol Central 192
Bishopsworth 176
Soundwell 175
Bristol North 151
Bristol Penguins 130
Star swimmer for Clevedon was Liam Wakefield for
a stunning swimming performance. PB's were gained on the night by:
Matthew Bray, Bethan Clark, Matthew Ford (2),
Luke Gardiner, Emily Harden, Ben Horner, Heather Jones, Tom Jones
(3), Suzannah King, Steff Reynolds (2), Amber Summerell, Liam Wakefield
(2) and Christopher Warren.
Clevedon had two swimmers in action at the Solent
Open Water Championship last weekend. Gary Carpenter defied choppy
sea conditions to win the 4k race in a blistering 59.02 min time
- so continuing his impressive build up to his Bristol Channel attempt
scheduled for August 24th. Gary can be seen swimming 5 hour training
sessions in the Marine Lake on a regular basis.
Len Hurley swam in the 2k race on the Solent for the 20th time!
Len is preparing to take part in the famous Clevedon Long Swim on
the 11th August. Len is a founder member of the Middle Yeo Surf
Lifesaving Club and will be swimming the long swim for the 50th
consecutive time!
