When the Somerset County open water swimming team
made its way up to Holme Pierrepont in Nottingham on Saturday 25th
August, to take part in the National Open Water Championships, over
half of its members were from Clevedon Swimming Club! The Somerset
team came 6th aided by some fine performances from Clevedon swimmers.
In the 13 and 14 age group, Rosemary Harris had
to cut short a family holiday in France to compete and Sophie Feboul
had to dash from Nottingham to Bristol Airport to catch a plane
to Tunisia for her's. They both swam 1,500 and Sophie finished 15th
with Rosemary 22nd out of a large field.
Evey Carpenter, in the 15 and 16 year age group, finished 20th in
a 1,750m race.
Gary Carpenter represented the county in the 17
- 24 age group and swam 2k. He treated this as a warm up for his
record breaking Bristol Channel swim the following day, but still
came a creditable 10th.
The British Nationals were competed by the cream of the country's
open water swimmers and all the Clevedon contingent emerged with
great credit from such a senior level competition.
