News: ASA South West Chamionships

No team gala action to report on this week, but plenty of outstanding individual performances to relate.

Joel and Zak Holdaway travelled up to Gloucester and both came away with top ten finishes from a Level 3 Meet.

Four young swimmers represented Clevedon Swimming Club, sponsored by Bristol Hotspring, at the ASA South West Regional Championships held at Millfield. Olivia Twynham-Richardson, Guy Prideaux and the two Chappell sisters - Ellie and Amelia were pitted against some of the fastest swimmers in their age group in the country and came out pretty well! Olivia and Amelia are already recognised as two of the fastest 10 year olds by the National Rankings and both reached the finals of events. Olivia finishing 4th in the 200m Breaststroke and 7th in the 100m Breaststroke. Ellie swam some amazingly fast races in the 12 year old 100m and 200m Backstroke - smashing her PB's and producing times even quicker than our own, National qualifier, Steff Reynolds did at the same age. This makes her an exciting prospect for the future. Guy took 14 seconds off his 100m Freestyle PB and impressed the Somerset County Coach so much that he has now been asked to train with Taunton Deane (as well as Clevedon) as part of the Somerset Pathway which is the local programme to fast track promising talent.

Last, but not least, the club co-hosted the Clevedon and Chard Open Meet at Hutton Moor. There were too many fantastic swims to menton individually, but swimmers from the club won 12 Gold medals, 10 Silvers and 9 Bronzes. Several of the Age Groups were won by Clevedon Swimmers and we would have been very close to being top club - if we were not prohibited from entering as a host club!

The Gala was superbly well organised and many thanks should go to the organising committee and all the helpers and officials who volunteered their time. There were many comments from visitors as to how friendly the gala was and such a good time was had that some people even managed to get over the time clash with England's final World Cup game!
